PLATO Gallery presents the group project “REFLECTIONS”, dedicated to the theme of self-representation. Usually, we don’t think about the fact that we know our appearance only from the reflection in the mirror, but is a mirror always an objective source of knowledge? The myth of Narcissus does not convince us of this. Are the words we speak or write capable of fully reflecting our thoughts and feelings? Or maybe we are completely strange creatures from Plato’s dialogue, accustomed, however, to perceive ourselves as normal?

Jacques Lacan, reflecting on the development of personality, identified the so-called “mirror stage,” when a small child first sees his reflection and from then on begins to distinguish between himself (his own “I”) and others (“not-I”). It is the mirror stage that allows us to develop, among other things, empathy.

The exhibition invites you to immerse yourself in reflection on our interactions with ourselves and others. The works of Katya Afonina, Oksana Afanasyeva and Elizaveta Zalieva will allow you to see not only the personalities of the artists themselves, but also to get to know yourself by peering into mirrors.
