Born in 1982, Nam Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Canadian artist based in Berlin. Working in the medium of oil painting, he explores abstraction as a vehicle for perceptual investigation. In his current work he explores how ongoing explorations of craft can unlock new possibilities in color intensity and complexity that create a space of altered experience. In the tradition of phenomenological thought, through his material and compositional experiments, he aims to shift the experience of viewer beyond one of cognitive understanding towards that of embodied affect of light and space.
Nam is working in a very specific technique, he says: “In the past two years, I have started making my own gesso and infusing them with pigments to work with a overlooked technique of gesso-painting as an additional layer in my exploration. In an experimental set of the (G.R.S) Gesso Research Series paintings , I explored a new range of possibilities towards my aesthetic goal of exploring of conveying atmospheric space as a perceptual content in my art. In these works, the gesture has return to my work as a field of atmospheric movement.”
